Wrapping Up the Year with Our Final Kruger Adventure

           Memories in the Wild

And just like that, our 2025 Kruger trips have come to an end—9 schools, 9 trips, 99 children, done and dusted! What a journey it has been. At Eco Children, we believe that education should stretch beyond the classroom, and our Kruger National Park excursions have once again proven to be one of the most powerful ways to nurture young minds and awaken purpose.

Imagine living just kilometers away from one of the world’s greatest game reserves, yet never stepping foot inside. For many of the children we serve, this is their reality. But the moment they pass through Orpen Gate for the very first time, the magic begins. Wide-eyed faces press against the windows, hearts leap at the sight of giraffes gracefully crossing the road, and the distant roar of a lion sparks awe that words can hardly capture.

Our day begins with a stop at the first lookout point. Here, learners enjoy a warm cup of coffee and a light breakfast while taking in the beauty of the landscape around them. It’s more than a meal—it’s a chance to pause, breathe, and absorb the wild that surrounds them. Hands-on activities wrap up this stop, encouraging curiosity and teamwork as learners begin to connect with the natural world.

From there, we continue to Satara, where the children tour the educational museum and attend a special lesson with Kruger Park staff. Here, conservation comes alive. They learn about ecosystem dynamics, the delicate balance of plants and animals, and the challenges facing our environment today. These aren’t abstract discussions—their lessons are grounded in what they can see, hear, and feel around them.

Lunch is a highlight in itself: a sizzling skottel braai at the picnic spot, laughter echoing between bites as friendships grow stronger. Then, with hearts and bellies full, we make the journey back, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of the day.

These trips are more than just outings. They are carefully designed to complement our environmental curriculum—turning theory into reality. Guided by Eco Children mentors, learners dive into conversations about:

Ecosystem dynamics – how all living things, including people, play a role in nature’s balance.

Conservation challenges – from poaching to climate change and habitat loss.

Sustainable practices – practical ways they can care for the environment in their own homes and communities.

But the impact goes even deeper. For many learners, this is their first time traveling, their first group lunch beyond school walls, or even their first opportunity to share their thoughts during group reflections. These experiences build confidence, spark dreams, and instill a sense of belonging. They begin to see themselves not just as students, but as future stewards of South Africa’s rich natural heritage.

None of this would be possible without the generosity of our partners. A special thank you goes to The Legacy Experience Foundation and Sorai, whose support has made these 2025 Kruger trips a reality. Their belief in the power of environmental education mirrors our own. By covering transportation, meals, activities, and learning materials, they have removed barriers and allowed learners to fully immerse themselves in this life-changing experience. We are deeply grateful for their continued partnership and vision.

What begins as a single day in the bush often becomes the seed of a lifelong passion. The ripple effect is real: children return to their schools and communities with new perspectives, new confidence, and a newfound connection to nature. They are no longer hearing about wildlife—they are part of the story.

As we close the chapter on this year’s Kruger trips, we celebrate not just the 99 children who took part, but the countless lives they will influence with the lessons, memories, and inspiration they carry forward. These excursions are not just field trips—they are acts of empowerment, shaping a more sustainable and compassionate future for our country.

Here’s to the wild, to the memories made, and to the children whose dreams now stretch beyond the horizon of the Kruger

           A Reward to Remember

From the 19th to the 21st of September, 27 remarkable learners from our nine partner primary schools embarked on a journey filled with adventure, learning, and laughter at Blyde Adventure Camp. This annual excursion is a celebration of their hard work, dedication, and determination throughout the year—and this year’s experience was truly unforgettable.

The moment the learners arrived at Blyde Adventure Camp, their excitement was palpable. Bags were dropped, cabins were explored, and curious eyes took in the breathtaking surroundings. The air buzzed with anticipation as students realised that these three days were going to be like no other.

The adventure kicked off with a series of leadership games and team-building challenges designed to encourage collaboration, communication, and problem-solving. Teams cheered each other on as they navigated obstacle courses, solved puzzles, and worked together to achieve common goals. It was incredible to see students who normally sit quietly in class suddenly taking charge, supporting their peers, and stepping confidently into leadership roles.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the learners experienced lantern crawling, quietly moving through the bush with only the glow of lanterns lighting their way. The thrill, the laughter, and even the occasional squeal of surprise made it a magical night of discovery and courage.

The evenings were just as exciting. On the final night, learners competed in a potjiekos competition, working in small teams to prepare a traditional South African stew over an open fire. This was more than just cooking—it was a lesson in teamwork, creativity, and patience. Smiles beamed as students tasted their own creations, celebrated each other’s efforts, and learned that success is sweeter when shared with others.

Another highlight of the excursion was a visit to the Maholoholo Rehabilitation Centre, where learners had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to interact with wildlife and learn about conservation. Faces lit up with awe as they observed animals up close, hearing stories of rescue and rehabilitation. For many, it was a moment of inspiration—a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of protecting it for generations to come.

Beyond the activities, what made the getaway truly special were the connections and memories formed. Students laughed together, encouraged one another, and created friendships that will last long after the excursion ended. From quiet moments of reflection under the stars to the shared thrill of completing a challenging obstacle course, every experience contributed to a journey that was as much about personal growth as it was about fun.

The Annual Winners’ Excursion at Blyde Adventure Camp was more than a reward—it was a story of courage, creativity, teamwork, and discovery. It perfectly exemplifies Eco Children’s mission: to celebrate effort, nurture curiosity, and create opportunities for children to grow, explore, and thrive beyond the classroom.

As the three days drew to a close and learners returned home with backpacks full of memories and hearts full of pride, one thing was clear: this adventure had left an indelible mark on everyone involved. We are so proud of these young learners, whose dedication and spirit continue to inspire us. This getaway reminded us all that with the right guidance, encouragement, and opportunities, children can achieve incredible things—and have an unforgettable adventure along the way.

Here’s to our brilliant winners—you are the heart of Eco Children, and we cannot wait to see where your curiosity and courage take you next!

This September, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Tshegofatso, whose innovative teaching at Mphaku Primary School continues to inspire both her students and colleagues alike.

Tshegofatso has a unique ability to make learning an adventure. She goes beyond textbooks, bringing nature, curiosity, and creativity into the classroom in ways that spark excitement and engagement. From designing hands-on experiments to creating outdoor learning experiences, her approach encourages students to explore, ask questions, and think critically. Through her innovative methods, she ensures that every child feels included, valued, and empowered to learn in their own way.

But Tshegofatso’s impact goes far beyond the classroom walls. She is a mentor, guide, and source of inspiration for her colleagues, always willing to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and find new ways to enrich the learning experience. Her energy, positivity, and commitment are contagious, creating an environment where both children and adults are motivated to give their best every day.

            As Albert Einstein once said,

           “Creativity is intelligence having fun.”

Tshegofatso embodies this principle in every lesson she teaches, proving that education is not only about knowledge, it’s about curiosity, imagination, and fostering a lifelong love of learning. Her dedication reminds us that the most meaningful impact comes from combining passion with action, innovation with care, and knowledge with heart.

Please join us in congratulating Tshegofatso on this well-deserved recognition! Her creative spirit, innovative teaching, and unwavering dedication make a lasting difference in the lives of the children she teaches and in the Eco Children community as a whole.

We are proud to celebrate her this September and deeply grateful for the light, energy, and inspiration she brings to every classroom.

The festive season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness, but for many children in our communities, it’s also a time when the reality of limited resources becomes painfully clear. At Eco Children, we believe that every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and loved, no matter their circumstances. That’s why, this year, we are inviting you to join us in creating brighter futures and unforgettable festive memories through our year-end campaigns: Kit-a-Kid and Merry Moments.

           Kit-a-Kid: A Uniform Can Change a Life

Education is one of the greatest gifts a child can receive, yet for many learners in our partner schools, the lack of a proper school uniform can make going to school a daily challenge. Since 2009, our Kit-a-Kid Programme has been changing this reality, providing over 5,000 children with complete school uniforms — including shoes, shorts or skirts, shirts, and jerseys.

For many children, receiving their first brand-new uniform is a moment of pride and confidence that changes the way they approach school and learning. And this year, we aim to provide 220 more learners with the dignity, self-esteem, and opportunities they deserve — but we can’t do it without your help.

Just R500 can provide a child with a complete uniform. That single contribution gives them more than clothes; it gives them confidence, hope, and the chance to walk into class with their head held high.

Merry Moments: Spreading the Magic of Christmas

While Kit-a-Kid equips children for school, our Merry Moments project ensures they experience the magic of the festive season. For many learners, Christmas can pass quietly without the joy of opening a present. Merry Moments changes that — turning ordinary December mornings into unforgettable memories filled with laughter, wonder, and love.

Your contribution, no matter how big or small, becomes a beautifully wrapped gift, a symbol of hope, and a Merry Moment a child will treasure forever. Through this initiative, we aim to spread joy and kindness, reminding every child that they are seen, valued, and loved.

No donation is too small, every rand helps create smiles, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Make a Difference This Festive Season

This year-end, you can be part of something truly special. By supporting Kit-a-Kid, you help children walk to school with pride and confidence. By supporting Merry Moments, you bring the magic of Christmas into the lives of children who might otherwise go without.

Together, we can create brighter futures, happier hearts, and memories that last a lifetime. Join us this festive season in giving the gifts of dignity, joy, and hope — and let’s make this December one full of Merry Moments for every child.

Because when we give, we don’t just change a child’s Christmas or school year — we change their future.

Celebrating Excellence: Meet our August Star Employee

This August, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Khutso, whose journey with us has been nothing short of inspiring.

Khutso’s story with Eco Children began as a dedicated volunteer, giving her time, energy, and heart to support our Eco Village and Library. Day after day, she showed up with a smile, ready to contribute wherever she was needed. Her passion, consistency, and willingness to go the extra mile quickly made her stand out. As the famous quote goes, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.” Khutso exemplifies all of this in her daily work.

Last year, Khutso officially joined the Eco Children family in a permanent role, and she continues to pour her heart into everything she does. From inspiring young minds to supporting her colleagues, Khutso embodies the teamwork, dedication, and care that we hold dear. Her contributions go far beyond the tasks on her job description – she brings light, energy, and positivity to every corner of the organization.

One of the most remarkable things about Khutso is her unwavering commitment to the children we serve. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure they feel seen, valued, and supported. Whether it’s through mentoring a student, organizing educational activities, or simply lending an encouraging word, Khutso shows that true impact comes from compassion combined with action.

          As Helen Keller once said,

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”

Khutso embodies this principle daily. She reminds us that the magic of Eco Children lies not only in the programs we run but in the people who pour their hearts into making them succeed.

Please join us in congratulating Khutso on this well-deserved recognition! We are so proud to have her as part of our team and deeply grateful for the positive impact she makes every day.

Her dedication inspires us all to strive for excellence and reminds us of the incredible difference one passionate individual can make.

Celebrating Themba’s Journey

This July, we are proud to celebrate someone whose story is
deeply rooted in the very heart of Eco Children’s mission — Themba, our
Employee of the Month.

Themba's journey with Eco Children began long before he joined our team. In 2007, he was just a young boy attending our holiday workshops hosted at Klaserie Private Nature Reserve’s headquarters. Even then, his curiosity and passion for nature stood out.

Little did we know at the time that the young boy seated under the marula tree, learning about ecosystems and animal tracks, would one day become one of our most dedicated team members.

Over the years, Themba remained closely connected to Eco Children. As he grew, so did his sense of responsibility and love for his community. He returned to us — not as a learner, but as a volunteer. For several years, Themba gave his time and energy to support our educational initiatives, always willing to lend a hand and share his growing knowledge with the next generation of learners.

Eventually, his consistent commitment, vibrant spirit, and leadership qualities earned him a well-deserved place on the team. Themba was officially hired as an Environmental Educator, a role in which he continues to thrive today.

Every day, Themba inspires young minds the way he was once inspired — guiding learners through environmental lessons, encouraging them to dream big, and showing them that they too can create change. His work goes far beyond the classroom. Themba is a mentor, a role model, and a living example of how investing in young people and education truly creates a ripple effect.

This month, we honour not just the incredible work Themba does today, but the entire arc of his story. From a young boy in our workshops to a powerful force for good in our team and community — Themba represents everything we stand for.

Congratulations, Themba. Your journey is nothing short of inspirational, and we are incredibly proud to have you as part of the Eco Children family.

Walking Wild 4 Girls 2025

The 4th edition of Walking Wild 4 Girls took place from the 6th to the 10th of July 2025, in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, and yet again it was another adventure filled with plenty of walking, learning and laughing.

What made this year special, was the people with whom I shared the journey with: Gary Freeman, who hosted us at his camp and lead the trails, Percy, for whom I raise funds for, Mark, my brother and my Dad, Derek, Tas Savage and Nats Howes from Kateka Safari & Wellness, who have supported this initiative right from the very beginning, and my aunt, Debby, came out from the UK to join us for our time in the bush.

This year was slightly different. We walked in the mornings, then would return to camp for an incredibly satisfying lunch, prepared by Gary himself, and then after a little nap we headed out into the bush at around 4 o’clock in the afternoon for another walk and sundowners.

In the afternoon of our first day, we had a sighting of a breeding herd of nearly 50 elephant in the Klaserie river, which we watched for almost half-an-hour. It was magical being so close to a member of the iconic ‘Big 5’, on foot, without feeling like we were in danger.

Day three brought with it a sighting of a white rhino in the river. We had spent the morning tracking it before Percy spotted it below us. We followed it and watched this threatened species slowly come towards us with intrigue, for a minute or two, before shooting off. Our fourth day was a highlight for me, spent walking along the Klaserie river on my family’s farm, Matamani, seeing that familiar stretch of river from a different angle instead of the game vehicle.

All in all, we kept this year simple, however, this enabled us to truly appreciate the wild and free pristine wilderness and take some time out from the busy world around us. It is always a privilege to walk in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve and to have Gary lead us, keep us safe, feed us, entertain us and share his extensive knowledge.

And so, it is safe to report that Walking Wild 4 Girls 2025 was indeed a success thanks to the support of family, friends, and even strangers and I cannot wait to start brainstorming ideas for our 2026 edition of Walking Wild 4 Girls.

Holiday Workshops with Eco Children

When the school term ends and learners head home for the holidays, Eco Children steps in to keep the energy, curiosity, and joy alive — through our much-loved Holiday Workshops.

These workshops offer more than just a way to keep children occupied during the break — they are a space for growth, discovery, and connection with nature. Our dedicated environmental educators play a key role in bringing these workshops to life. With passion and creativity, they design engaging, nature-based activities that spark curiosity and inspire young minds.

Whether it’s digging in the soil, learning how plants grow, or identifying insects and animal tracks, each activity is carefully planned to nurture a love for the environment. Children get the chance to experience first-hand what it means to care for the earth — all while having fun, getting messy, and staying active!

In between games and gardening, learners enjoy energetic soccer matches, educational challenges, and creative expression — all under the guidance of Eco Children’s caring team. These moments aren’t just about play; they’re about building confidence, teamwork, and a sense of purpose.

One of the cornerstones of our Holiday Workshops is ensuring that every child receives a nutritious meal. For many learners, this is one of the most important meals of the day. By making sure that tummies are full, we’re not just supporting physical wellbeing — we’re helping children stay focused, happy, and ready to learn.

At Eco Children, we believe that education doesn’t stop when school is out. Through these workshops, we continue to invest in our youth by providing opportunities to learn through nature, connect with others, and grow as future custodians of our planet.

These holiday sessions are made possible thanks to the unwavering support of our donors, partners, and volunteers. Your belief in our mission helps us bring joy and meaning to every school holiday — and for that, we are deeply grateful.

Together, we are growing green minds and bright futures, one workshop at a time.

Celebrating Excellence: Patrick Ndlovu, our June Employee of the Month

At Eco Children, we believe in the power of passionate individuals to plant seeds of change — in our environment, in our classrooms, and in our communities.

That’s why we are proud to shine a spotlight on someone who embodies all those values and more: Patrick Ndlovu, our Employee of the Month for June.

Patrick serves as an Environmental Educator at Mahlathi Primary School, where he plays an instrumental role in educating and inspiring the next generation of eco-conscious leaders. With a calm, humble presence and a deep-rooted commitment to environmental awareness, Patrick is more than just a teacher — he is a mentor, a role model, and a steward of positive change.

Whether he’s guiding learners through the intricacies of ecosystems, teaching them how to grow their own vegetables, or leading by example in the school’s permaculture garden, Patrick consistently goes above and beyond. His passion for nurturing both the earth and young minds is evident in everything he does — from classroom activities to after-school engagements and community outreach projects.

His colleagues describe him as a gentle soul with a quiet determination and an unshakable belief in the power of education. Learners admire him not only for his knowledge, but for the kindness and respect with which he treats every individual. Patrick’s work reflects Eco Children’s mission at its core:

           educate, empower, and uplift

           .

As we celebrate Patrick’s well-earned recognition this month, we are reminded of the importance of every single person in our Eco Children family. It’s the daily commitment of educators like Patrick that keeps our programmes thriving and our impact growing.

To Patrick, we say thank you. Thank you for the seeds you plant — both in the soil and in the hearts of those you teach. Your work is helping to grow a greener, more conscious future for us all!

TELUS Brings Joy, Growth, and Generosity to Makwetse Primary School

At Eco Children, we believe that true change is nurtured through connection, compassion, and collaboration. We had the immense honour of welcoming TELUS to Makwetse Primary School—a visit that left a lasting impression not only on our learners and staff, but on everyone who took part.

Close to 200 guests from TELUS arrived at the school, greeted by eager learners and a sense of excitement that buzzed through the air. What followed was a morning full of hands-on, purposeful activity that reflected TELUS’s deep commitment to giving back and creating lasting impact in the communities they visit.

The day began with environmental projects that are close to our hearts. TELUS volunteers eagerly joined our learners in planting trees and seedlings, laying down roots that will one day provide shade, nourishment, and a symbol of the growth we aim to inspire through our programmes. With care and dedication, they also helped paint and refurbish our keyhole gardens, breathing new life into these vital spaces that serve as educational and nutritional resources for our school.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the visit was the way TELUS volunteers connected with our Grade R learners through fun, engaging, and interactive activities. Storytelling, games, and creative play filled the air with laughter and learning, demonstrating the value of human connection across generations and cultures.

As the day continued, the atmosphere shifted to the school field for a spirited soccer match—a highlight for many learners and guests alike. The game brought together students, staff, and TELUS volunteers in a shared moment of joy, teamwork, and camaraderie. It was more than just a game; it was a celebration of community, togetherness, and mutual respect.

The generosity of the TELUS team extended beyond their time and effort. In a touching gesture, each learner at Makwetse Primary received an individual goodie bag, filled with thoughtful items that brought smiles to young faces and created a sense of being seen and valued.

Moreover, TELUS made a significant financial contribution of $5,000 to Eco Children. This generous donation will go a long way in supporting our ongoing work in environmental education, early childhood development, and community upliftment. We are incredibly grateful for this investment in our shared vision of a brighter, greener future.

We would also like to extend our deepest thanks to Kapama Private Game Reserve, who not only hosted the TELUS group during their stay but also played a crucial role in facilitating their visit to Makwetse Primary School. Their ongoing partnership and unwavering support continue to make opportunities like this possible. We are proud to work alongside such dedicated collaborators who share our values and commitment to lasting impact.

As we reflect on this unforgettable day, we are filled with gratitude—for the time, energy, and generosity of the TELUS team; for the support of Kapama; and for the joy and curiosity of our learners, who continue to inspire us every day.

At Eco Children, we know that transformation doesn't happen in isolation. It is through partnerships, shared values, and collective action that we are able to plant the seeds of change—both literally and figuratively.

Growing a Greener Future

This week, we celebrated World Environment Day, a global call to action for people everywhere to protect the Earth and create a more sustainable future.

But here at Eco Children, this isn’t just a one-day event—it’s at the heart of everything we do, every single day.

Rooted in the rural communities of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, Eco Children is on a mission to nurture not only the land, but the minds and hearts of the next generation. And this World Environment Day, we’re proud to spotlight the work that is transforming lives, landscapes, and learning.

At Eco Children, we believe that real change starts young. Our approach to environmental education goes far beyond the classroom.

Our keyhole gardens are a symbol of sustainable living. These small, productive gardens use minimal water, are easy to maintain, and allow children to grow their own vegetables. They're more than a food source—they're outdoor classrooms where learners discover composting, soil health, food cycles, and the value of self-reliance.

Environmental themes are integrated across the curriculum. Whether it’s science, geography, or reading, students learn how climate change, biodiversity, and conservation affect their own communities. The goal isn’t just to teach them about nature—it’s to help them fall in love with it.

We also promote eco-literacy through school libraries, filled with books that spark curiosity about the world. Thanks to our literacy programmes, children gain the reading and research skills they need to understand and respond to environmental challenges.

This transformative work is only possible because of our generous donor, The Legacy Experience Foundation. Their unwavering support empowers us to build stronger schools, train dedicated teachers, and develop community-centred education that honours both people and planet.

This World Environment Day, we recommit to a future where every child has the knowledge, resources, and passion to care for the Earth. Together—with you, our educators, our communities, and the continued support of our donors—we’re planting the roots of a brighter, greener tomorrow.

Thank you for being part of this journey.

Celebrating our Employee of the Month

At Eco Children, we love celebrating the incredible individuals who make our mission come to life.

This May, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on someone whose story perfectly embodies our values of dedication, growth, and community impact — Rumi Malope, our Employee of the Month.

Rumi’s journey with Eco Children began in 2018 when she joined us as a volunteer in our Eco Village. Even then, her passion for education and the environment stood out. Year after year, she showed up with unwavering commitment, eager to learn, lead, and uplift those around her.

In 2024, all her hard work paid off when she was officially offered a permanent position on our team. Today, she serves at Mapalane Primary School, where she continues to make a difference every single day. Her warmth, reliability, and can-do spirit have not only earned her this month’s recognition, but also the admiration and respect of her colleagues and community.

Rumi was announced as Employee of the Month at our recent staff workshop — a moment that reflected her journey of perseverance and purpose. As her name was called, the room filled with cheers and applause, a testament to the positive energy and inspiration she brings to our team every day.

In her role at Mapalane Primary School, Rumi leads environmental education initiatives, supports learners in their academic growth, and serves as a role model for young people in the community. She is deeply involved in creating hands-on learning experiences, helping learners understand the value of sustainability, conservation, and self-empowerment.

Her colleagues often speak of her infectious optimism, her patience with learners, and her tireless work ethic. Rumi doesn’t just do her job — she brings heart into everything she touches. Whether she’s planting a garden, facilitating a workshop, or mentoring a fellow educator, Rumi does it with purpose and pride.

Her story reminds us that real change starts with people — those who are willing to show up, do the work, and lift others along the way. We’re honoured to have Rumi as part of the Eco Children family and excited to see her grow even further in the years to come.

The YES (Youth Employment Service) program is a government-backed initiative that connects young South Africans with 12-month work experiences in various sectors. It’s more than just a job placement—it’s a chance for youth to gain valuable skills, earn an income, and take an important step toward building a successful and sustainable career.

Why We Take Learners to the Kruger

Inspiring a Generation of Environmental Guardians

At Eco Children, we are committed to nurturing young minds, not just with knowledge, but with experiences that awaken purpose. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through our Kruger National Park trips—a cornerstone of our environmental education program. These trips aren’t just about seeing animals. They are about unlocking new perspectives, inspiring dreams, and building connections to nature that last a lifetime.

Imagine being a child who’s grown up just kilometers away from one of the world’s most renowned game reserves, yet you’ve never set foot inside. This is the reality for many of the learners we support. When they enter the park for the first time, their faces light up with awe. The moment they see a giraffe gracefully crossing the road or hear a lion’s distant roar—something changes.

They’re no longer just hearing about wildlife. They’re experiencing it. They’re forming personal memories with the landscape that shapes our country’s identity. These moments are profound—and often life-changing.

Our Kruger trips are designed to complement our in-class environmental curriculum. But in the park, the lessons come alive.

Guided by Eco Children mentors, the learners take part in talks about:

           •	Ecosystem dynamics – how plants, animals, and people all play a role in nature’s balance.

           •	Conservation challenges – including poaching, climate change, and habitat loss.

           •	Sustainable practices – and how they can make a difference at home and in their communities.

These discussions aren’t abstract. They’re grounded in what the learners are seeing, hearing, and feeling. It’s hands-on education at its best. Beyond the educational value, these trips give learners a sense of belonging and self-worth. They see themselves as part of something bigger—as stewards of a heritage that is theirs to protect. For many, these outings are also their first opportunity to travel, to eat in a group outside of school, or to speak in front of others during group reflections. It builds confidence. It builds friendships. It builds dreams.

Thank You to The Legacy Experience Foundation. None of this would be possible without the generosity of our sponsors. This year, our first Kruger trip was made a reality through the support of The Legacy Experience Foundation, whose belief in environmental education mirrors our own.

Their contribution ensured that transportation, meals, activities, and learning materials were all covered—removing barriers and allowing learners to simply immerse themselves in the experience. We are deeply grateful for their partnership and vision.

What starts as a day trip often becomes the beginning of a lifelong passion. The ripple effect is real—and it starts with a single day in the bush.

As we continue this year’s Kruger Trip series, we invite you to follow along. These are more than excursions—they are acts of empowerment. And with every child who into Kruger for the first time, we are investing in a more sustainable, compassionate future for South Africa.

Training for Success: Empowering Educators for Lasting Impact

At Eco Children, we believe that empowered teachers are the cornerstone of quality education.

Our monthly staff training workshops are designed to equip educators from our partner schools with innovative teaching methods that ensure they can deliver engaging and effective learning experiences. These sessions not only upskill and empower teachers but also reignite their passion for teaching, foster creativity and innovation in the classroom, and ultimately enhance the quality of education for every child they reach.

Building Capacity, One Workshop at a Time

Each month, our team collaborates with local and external education specialists to deliver hands-on, practical workshops focused on the realities of rural teaching. These workshops address the real-world challenges that educators face in under-resourced schools, and they are tailored to meet teachers where they are — both professionally and personally.

           Key focus areas include:

           Early Childhood Development

Teachers are equipped with creative, low-cost strategies to stimulate motor development and foundational skills in young learners. From clay modelling to gross-motor play, the sessions reinforce how play-based learning leads to strong academic outcomes.

           Mathematics & Numeracy Skills

Many educators report feeling underprepared to teach core numeracy concepts. Through targeted math capacity building, our workshops help demystify methods, promote problem-solving techniques, and build confidence in the classroom.

           Social & Emotional Learning (SEL)

Recognizing that learning is not just academic, we focus on helping teachers support their learners emotionally. SEL training helps teachers guide students in developing respect, resilience, and empathy — essential qualities for both the classroom and the wider community.

           Classroom Innovation & Resourcefulness

In schools with limited materials, creativity becomes a superpower. Workshops encourage teachers to use recyclable and natural materials to create engaging lessons — proving that quality education doesn’t always come from expensive resources. The workshops don’t just provide skills — they build a community of practice, where teachers encourage each other, share ideas, and feel part of a larger mission.

A Ripple of Change in Every Classroom

Every workshop plants a seed — and we’ve seen firsthand how those seeds grow. As teachers apply their new skills, the quality of classroom learning improves. Children are more engaged, lessons are more interactive, and schools become centres of inspiration within their communities.

With stronger teachers come stronger learners, and with stronger learners comes the hope of transformed communities.

Lydia serves as both an environmental educator and librarian, inspiring young learners every day through her commitment to environmental awareness, literacy, and holistic development. Her engaging teaching style and heartfelt care for her students have helped foster a culture of responsibility and curiosity about the natural world.

In addition to her work at the school, Lydia has recently achieved an exciting academic milestone—earning her BA degree in Psychology. This remarkable accomplishment reflects not only her personal determination but also her deep interest in understanding and supporting the emotional and mental well-being of the learners she works with.

Lydia embodies this truth every day, helping to shape future leaders who care about their communities and the planet.

On April 15th, we reached a proud and powerful milestone in the journey of Eco Children — the official opening of our very first Grade R Centre at Makwetse Primary School! This momentous occasion was filled with joy, gratitude, and a deep sense of purpose, as we celebrated a step forward for early childhood education in our community.

Building the Future, One Child at a Time

The importance of Grade R — or the Reception Year — cannot be overstated. It’s during these early years that the foundations for lifelong learning are laid. Grade R is where children begin to explore their world, build social and emotional skills, and develop the confidence to take on the future.

This centre is more than a classroom — it’s a carefully crafted environment made for children, where learning happens through play, imagination, and exploration. Every element was thoughtfully designed to foster curiosity, joy, and growth.

From age-appropriate educational tools to beautifully curated play spaces, this Grade R Centre is a place where our youngest learners can truly thrive.

The new Grade R Centre features unique learning equipment designed by Hannah Barnes from Young Game Changers, whose creative approach promotes play-based learning that inspires problem-solving, collaboration, and confidence. Her contributions have added a vibrant and interactive dimension to the classroom that children are already responding to with excitement and joy.

We are also proud to integrate the Wild Hearts Environmental Education Programme, developed in collaboration with the Made Better Together Foundation. This inspiring curriculum weaves environmental awareness into early education through storytelling, games, and hands-on outdoor experiences — teaching children to care for the world around them from the very start.

The opening event was a true celebration of collaboration. From performances by the learners to speeches from our honoured guests, the day was filled with warmth and hope for what lies ahead. The excitement in the eyes of our Grade R learners said it all — this space is already making a difference.

A special thanks to our Eco Children team, whose passion and dedication ensured every detail was perfectly in place. Your planning, coordination, and heart brought this event — and this project — to life.

This Grade R Centre is just the beginning. As we look to the future, we remain committed to expanding access to quality early childhood education across our region. Together, we can nurture the conservationists, entrepreneurs, leaders, and changemakers of tomorrow — one young learner at a time.

Our Eco Gardens grow more than just vegetables

In the heart of Limpopo, where the sun rises over the bushveld and the soil tells stories of resilience, something beautiful is taking root — and it’s more than just spinach and tomatoes.

At Eco Children, we’ve always believed that education and environment go hand in hand. That belief comes to life in our school gardens — vibrant, living classrooms where children are not just learning to plant food, but growing confidence, knowledge, and a deep connection to the land.

            Sowing the Seeds of Sustainability

Each garden starts with a patch of soil and a whole lot of hope. Through our garden program, we partner with schools to establish productive vegetable gardens that are cared for by the learners themselves, alongside their teachers and community members.

The goal? To promote food security, environmental education, and hands-on learning — all while supporting the nutritional needs of learners.

From composting and water-wise gardening to understanding the life cycle of a plant, children don’t just read about these things — they live them.

More Than Meals: A Lesson in Life

Yes, these gardens help supplement school feeding schemes with fresh, healthy produce like cabbage, carrots, and beets. But the true impact goes far beyond the plate.

The ripple effects are incredible. Parents become involved. Community members volunteer. And soon, the garden becomes a space where everyone learns and contributes.

In some schools, surplus produce from the gardens is sold to support school needs or reinvested into expanding the project — a small but mighty example of community-led development.

In a region where challenges like poverty, food insecurity, and climate change are very real, these gardens are a quiet revolution. They teach our children that change doesn’t always come from far away — sometimes, it starts with your hands in the dirt and a seed of an idea.

So yes — we’re growing vegetables. But more importantly, we’re growing leaders, caretakers, and changemakers for tomorrow.

20 Years of Change

Celebrating two decades of Eco Children

Eco Children originated as an initiative by the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (KPNR) aimed at educating and enhancing the lives of children whose parents work at KPNR through holiday 'bush' workshops. These sessions were crafted to help children appreciate wildlife and foster a generation of nature advocates for the future.

As we commemorate 20 years of Eco Children, it's important to reflect on the remarkable journey that started with a straightforward concept: enriching the lives of children linked to the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve (KPNR). This initiative has grown into a transformative presence in South Africa, demonstrating that empowering youth can create lasting impacts on both the environment and local communities.

The vision of Eco Children swiftly extended beyond the KPNR. Today, we proudly support nine Primary Schools in neighbouring towns and villages, benefiting a total of 5,347 children. While we've made significant strides, our mission remains unchanged: We empower the children in rural Mpumalanga and Limpopo by developing their capacity to flourish and become catalysts of positive change in their families and communities.

We sow seeds of change by creating an environment conducive to learning, increasing their awareness of conservation; improving the quality of their education; and providing opportunities for talented learners.

By weaving nature-based learning into the curriculum, children gain a richer understanding of their natural surroundings. This method not only elevates their educational journey but also empowers them to actively engage in conservation efforts.

It's important to recognize that many children benefiting from Eco Children come from some of the most disadvantaged areas. By fostering a relationship between these communities and their natural heritage, we address educational disparities and economic challenges. As these children learn about conservation, they also acquire valuable skills that can lead to improved opportunities for themselves and their communities.

Reflecting on the last two decades, we celebrate not only the milestones reached but the innumerable individual stories of growth, awareness, and passion ignited among the children. Each workshop, project, and school partnership has contributed to shaping the future of these young minds.

As we continue to expand, we eagerly anticipate new partnerships and innovative programmes that will extend our reach and deepen our impact. We envision a world where every child has the opportunity to engage with nature and acquire the skills needed for its preservation. Our goal is to alleviate the challenges of poverty by providing access to quality education.

Thank you for being an integral part of this incredible journey. Here's to many more years of empowering young minds and making a positive impact in our world. Together, let's ensure that the next generation inherits a planet that is not just preserved but thriving.

As I write this article, I am reminded of the incredible journey of a remarkable individual. Dr Hannah Barnes' dedication to education has not only transformed the lives of countless students but has also revolutionised how we approach learning, paving the way for innovative and game-changing methods.

This is the story of Dr Hannah Barnes, a passionate educator from South Africa whose journey from teaching in traditional classrooms to developing game-changing educational resources has left an indelible mark on the world of education. Hannah was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, where she developed a love for learning and a passion for teaching from an early age. From her humble beginnings in a public school, she navigated various challenges and setbacks, always fuelled by her unwavering determination to make a difference in education.

After completing her schooling, Hannah harboured aspirations of becoming a personal manager. However, the lack of financial resources to pursue higher education did not deter her. Instead, she found an alternative path by securing a bursary for teaching, a decision that would shape her career trajectory in ways she could have never imagined. Her journey into the world of education led her to pursue a BA in Education, followed by higher diplomas and postgraduate studies in education. Her expertise in mathematics and her love for languages, particularly Northern Sotho and French, set the stage for a career filled with diverse teaching experiences.

Hannah found herself teaching mathematics and French at a prominent high school in Pretoria, a role that would define the next seven years of her career. Her passion for education and her innate ability to inspire and motivate her students propelled her into leadership roles, where she played a pivotal part in reshaping the educational landscape of the institution. However, the turning point in Hannah's career came when she was presented with an opportunity to co-author a mathematics book, a project that would set her on a path of innovation and transformative education.

This marked the beginning of a series of achievements, including writing best-selling math books and being recognised as a leading voice in the field of mathematics education. Following her tenure at the high school, Hannah continued to impact the education sector through lecturing at the University of Pretoria. Her dedication to her craft and innovative teaching methodologies positioned her as a thought leader in education, inspiring a new generation of educators and shaping the future of learning. In 2013, Hannah made a significant shift in her career by transitioning to Hoedspruit, where she continued to make meaningful contributions to education.

The journey started in 2013 with the initiation of extra maths lessons for Eco Children bursary students. In 2016, intermediate phase teacher training math workshops became a turning point in her career. The workshops resulted in a noticeable improvement in class percentages and drew the attention of district officials. The scope of the workshops expanded to include more districts, and after the COVID-19 pandemic, funding for the workshops shifted to Kapama Game Reserve. This led to the establishment of Bush Maths, a consultancy born out of a passion for education and the bush. However, the onset of the pandemic led to a loss of work.

During the unprecedented challenges brought about by the global pandemic, Hannah demonstrated her resilience and adaptability. In response to the educational disruptions caused by COVID-19, she identified a critical need for reimagining early childhood education. She launched Young Game Changers, a revolutionary play-based and impactful learning approach. Young Game Changers represents a paradigm shift in education, focusing on problem-solving, financial literacy, and sustainability as its core pillars.

This prompted the development of educational resources, including the Young Game Changers cards, to promote number sense development and problem-solving skills among young learners. The Young Game Changers initiative encompasses academic, financial literacy, and sustainability pillars, with over 50 games designed for Grade R teachers. Bush Maths continues to serve as a consultancy for higher grades, while Young Game Changers has evolved to become part of the Early Childhood Development foundation phase. The vision is to cultivate play-based learning and classroom culture while providing educational opportunities for underprivileged children.

Through a series of innovative games and resources, Hannah has addressed critical gaps in early childhood development and provided a platform for children to cultivate essential skills in a fun and engaging manner. Furthermore, Hannah has extended her vision for inclusive and quality education through initiatives like Toys4Trash, emphasising the importance of enriching learning experiences for children from all walks of life. Her commitment to educational equity and her unwavering belief in the transformative power of education continue to drive her work forward.

For Eco Children’s Eco Villages to remain as beautiful as they are, constant maintenance and, in some cases, renovations are required. This was the case with Seganyane Primary School, where extensive renovations were needed.

Renovations at Seganyane began in earnest in January 2024, with the demolition of old keyhole vegetable gardens. With the building of vibrant keyhole gardens, an innovative outdoor classroom, and two modern Greenhouses, the school is now poised to provide a more engaging and sustainable learning environment. These improvements will enrich the curriculum and foster a deeper connection with nature, encouraging students to explore and learn beyond the confines of traditional classrooms.

The students are already reaping the benefits of the new learning spaces and the hands-on agricultural learning opportunities provided by the Greenhouses. Their excitement and active participation are a clear testament to the positive impact of this project on their learning experience.

Looking ahead, we are committed and excited to continue our efforts to support Seganyane Primary School and our other schools in the region. Opening of Tshokolo Primary School Library

On 4 March 2024, our seventh library at Tshokolo Primary School was officially opened. This library, which also features an interactive EduBoard, is a testament to the generosity and vision of the Holder Family. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for sponsoring four libraries in our partnering schools. Christopher Holder joined us for the momentous occasion and cut the ribbon alongside our chairman, Deon Huysamer. This library, a symbol of hope, will undoubtedly pave the way for a brighter future for many children. We are also excited to announce that the Holder Family is continuing their support by sponsoring our eighth library at Powerline Primary School, with construction set to commence in July 2024.

Breaking Ground - Eco Children’s first Grade R Centre

The emotional, social and physical development of young children has a direct effect on their overall development and on the adults they will become. That is why understanding the need to invest in very young children is so important, to maximise their future well-being. Play allows kids to learn and improve their cognitive, social, language, coordination and motor skills. Without being able to play, kids may develop those skills at a severely stunted rate. The construction of our first Grade R Centre commenced in April with a groundbreaking ceremony at Makwetse Primary School. The centre will comprise a 200m2 building with three classrooms accommodating 108 Grade R learners at Makwetse Primary School. The learners will have a fully equipped playground fenced off from the rest of the school. This milestone project has been made possible by the generosity of the Jell Foundation, the headline sponsor, and Kapama Private Game Reserve. The project is expected to be completed in July 2024.

After a successful academic year in 2023, our 11 bursary students from Southern Cross Schools have begun their college journey. Two students are in Grade 8, six in Grade 9, two in Grade 11, and one in Grade 12. Their achievements have been outstanding, not only in academics but also in their active participation in extracurricular activities. Xolile, a Grade 12 student, has been appointed as the Head of Boarding and CRUX leader for 2024. His hard work and exceptional leadership skills have not only brought him personal success but have also served as a beacon of hope for our community. In 2024, we also welcomed our first Lowveld Academy bursary student. Additionally, we are supporting two tertiary students. We are very proud of Kwetsimane Mathebula, who joined Southern Cross Schools in 2012 in Grade 8 and graduated in 2023 with an LLB. She is currently doing her articles at a law firm in Cape Town. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of education. It has been truly inspiring to witness the personal growth of the students.

It is equally important to acknowledge the hard work of learners who take care of vegetables in our keyhole gardens with love, just like it is important to acknowledge top academic performers. Our incentive initiatives recognise both.

For many of our students, these vouchers are a lifeline, ensuring that they have the necessary uniforms to attend school. So far, we have donated more than 5,000 school uniforms through this initiative, making a tangible difference in the lives of these children and their families.

initiative, an annual, heartwarming event, brought early Christmas joy to nearly 700 children at the end of 2023. The children, who might not have had the opportunity to celebrate Christmas otherwise, were delighted to find stockings filled to the brim with gifts. This initiative was made possible by the collective efforts of our community, and we are proud of the spirit of giving that it represents.
